This museum is located at the base of the Akame 48 Waterfalls in Mie Prefecture. Here they have 9 varieties and around 50 salamander, starting with giant salamander from the Akame 48 Waterfalls.

An exhibition of giant salamander born in Akame
The giant salamander is the world’s largest amphibian and is designated as a special natural monument. They are also known as ‘living fossils’ as their appearance has not changed in about 3,000 years. There is a tank inside the entrance containing giant salamander of four to ten years old. A giant salamander about four years old is about 10cm in length. In a large tank which replicates a rocky environment, you can see the center’s oldest giant salamander. His estimated age is over 60 years old! He is more than a meter long.
There is also a water tank for the giant salamander aged from 20 to 30 years old. Each of the salamander here are known for their individuality, such as ‘a curious personality” and ‘a mischievous temperament’, so please take your time to observe them closely. The Akame 48 Waterfalls are the habitat of the giant salamander, so if you are lucky you might see a giant salamander living in the rivers and falls.
There are newts here, too
Besides the giant salamander, there are a few other amphibians exhibited in this center. The Okinawan Swordtail Newt, which is designated as a quasi-endangered species, inhabits the Amami islands and is characterized by an orange belly. There are also many Paramesotriton labiatus, another newt variety, that live in southeastern China. There are Mexican Walking Fish, which have funny faces and are commonly known as axolotls.
There is the Iberian ribbed newt is found in Spain and Morrocco and is the largest species of newt in Europe. There are many different types of newt on the Earth, even if we tend to lump them all under the same term. They all look very different and it is fun to compare them.
