Nagisa Aquarium (Yamaguchi) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Nagisa Aquarium opened in April 1990. It is located in Nagisa Park in the island town of Suo-Oshima which floats in the Seto Inland Sea. Here they have exhibitions of living creatures found in the Seto Inland Sea.

One of the biggest ‘touch pools’ in Japan!

One of the attractions of this aquarium is that it has one of the largest touching pools in the country. In most aquariums, you can only put your hand into the pool to touch the creatures. In this pool, however, it is possible climb in and walk around. The pool exhibits large sea creatures such as starfish, sea cucumber, sea hares, and other creatures that live amongst the rocks, as well as large creatures such as banded hound sharks and platyrhina rays. This is an enjoyable and absorbing exhibit for both children and adults because you can enjoy the water by actually entering the pool. You will be sure to get wet, so don’t forget to bring a towel and a change of clothes. The ‘Touch Corner’ is recommended for children who are a little scared to enter the pool. You can touch a variety of living things such as the sea urchin and the sea cucumber.

Attractive regional exhibitions

There are about 80 species and 750 creatures exhibited in this exhibition. Most of them were collected by the keepers themselves or provided by local fishermen. You can observe a variety of small creatures here, from familiar edible fish such as the horse mackerel and the sea bream to rare fish such the pacific seaweed pipefish and the seahorse. There are hand-drawn signs around the tanks with explanations about the fish as well as caricatures of fishermen cooking up their catch. This aquarium has a unique warmth that is the secret to its popularity.

Don’t miss the alveopora japonica coral!

The waters of Suo Oshima have the world’s largest colony of alveopora japonica coral, also known as the ‘Bouquet of the sea’ due to its flower shape. Watching the light sparkle off its green feelers has a mysterious and absorbing charm that will make you forget about time.
