Notojima Aquarium (Ishikawa) – Access, Hours & Fees

The aquarium inside Nodojimarinkai Park is the only aquarium in Ishikawa Prefecture. There is also a sea fishing center in the park so you can easily purchase fishing rods and bait to go fishing.

The biggest tank with a tunnel in Japan

This aquarium features a tank weighing 1,200 tons with a 22-meter tunnel. Filled with natural light, it feels as though you are taking a stroll through the sea as a Pacific white-sided dolphin or Humboldt penguin swims by. Inside the tunnel there are also observation windows to see into the Penguin’s nests as well as snorkel-style viewing boxes. This tank is full of ingenious ways to view the sea creatures from many angles.

‘Jellyfish Illumination Art’

The ‘Jellyfish Illumination Art’ in the main building is one of the recommended spots. Moon Jellyfish swim around in the tunnel tank and a cylindrical tank with mirrors placed around. Colorful LED lights reflect off the jellyfish and cast reflected light into the wider space. It creates a strange and beautiful world that you will want to watch forever.

See the majestic whale shark

The whale sharks can be found in ‘Blue World’, a compelling area of the aquarium containing the largest water tank on the Sea of Japan weighing 1,600 tons. Whale sharks and large warm-water fish swim in this tank which is Illuminated with deep-blue lights. The effect is quite fantastic. In winter they install kotatsu (low Japanese tables with heating underneath) in front of the tank so that visitors can get cozy and watch the whale sharks at their leisure.

The high-quality dolphin show is a must-see!

The dolphin and sea lion show is the most popular attraction at this aquarium. It is an excellent show in which the animals dance, play ball games, catch rings and more. The 25-minute showtime flies by with the comical routine of the adorable California sea lion.

The sardines create a big wave

There is a dynamic sardine show that takes place twice a day for five minutes with around 10,000 sardines. They swim in a circle and then break apart before coming back together. Their scales glimmer and the effect is very beautiful. This kind of show is rare in Japan and is one that shouldn’t be missed.
