Tateshina Amusement Aquarium (Nagano) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Tateshina Amusement Aquarium is located on the Tateshina Plateau at an altitude of 1750 meters. It is located at the highest altitude of any aquarium in the world and looks from the outside like a Greek temple. There is no sea in Nagano Prefecture, and this aquarium is a freshwater fish specialty aquarium which brings in natural spring water for the tanks. It does not get crowded, so there are days when you can enjoy the aquarium as if you have rented it for yourself! It is a local attraction that is worth the trip.

An aquarium specializing in freshwater fish from around the world

It might be ‘freshwater fish only’ but there are exhibits of thousands of freshwater fish from all over the world! The best attraction is the large tank with pirarucu, the largest freshwater fish in the world. It is very powerful to see the big pirarucu swimming around their tank proudly. There is also a feeding event in the pirarucu tank accompanied by a commentary from the staff. Watching these huge fish at mealtime is very compelling! The carp feeding experience looks like a good one to try. Yes, they might be just regular carp, but seeing them all crowd together for their food is amazing. Carp are not afraid of humans so they come really close to you. We recommend this experience for young children who are interacting with living creatures for the first time.

Pets are allowed and there is even a dog run!

The ‘Tateshina Amusement Aquarium’ is unusual in that pets are allowed to enter. You can enjoy the aquarium with your dog or cat so long as they are properly leashed, registered and vaccinated. As long as your pet is not a nuisance to other visitors and does not damage the facilities it does not matter what kind of pet it is! The dog run opened in April 2014. We recommend this aquarium for visitors with dogs.

Fish Post

The ‘Fish Post’ was established by this aquarium as a measure to deal with recent problems with invasive species and the need to protect the environment. They say that you should never release fish you have kept as pets into the sea, so they allow people who can no longer keep their fish to ‘post’ or bring them to the aquarium instead.
