The Yamagata Freshwater Aquarium is located around the corner from the large water wheel just off the Route 118 in Ibaragi prefecture. Labeling itself ‘Japan’s smallest aquarium’, it still makes a fun place to stop.

Come face-to-face with the Japanese giant salamander
After entering the aquarium you will soon see the giant salamander, a recognized natural treasure. These salamander typically measure 50-70cm in the wild, but here in the freshwater there are 3 salamander measuring more than 1 meter long! The biggest salamander measures a staggering 1.4 meters. Their impressive size belies their gentle nature. You might find you feel a connection with them after viewing them for a little while. Be sure to take your time here!
A reproduction of the *river
One feature of this aquarium is its reproduction of the mountain torrent. The recreation spans the source to the mouth, and includes yamame, iwana, oikawa, carp and more. It is interesting to learn about all the fish that inhabit the *river close by.
Other fish to see include the itou and sougyou, and ayu in summer. There are also goldfish, himedaka, turtles and more, making up more than 50 species within this small aquarium.
Children will enjoy the mini bullet train and park
Freshwater aquariums may have something of a mature image, but on weekends and holidays there is a free mini SL (steam locomotive) and mini bullet train (sometimes only the mini bullet train is running).
Heading away from the aquarium and towards the river you will find the Seiryu park. There is no play equipment but there is plenty of grass for children to run around and you can enjoy being by the water. During the summer months we recommend taking a dip!
