The Yokohama Omoshiro Aquarium and Baby Aquarium is a compact aquarium in Yokohama’s central Chinatown housing 400 species and 10,000 creatures. The name means ‘Interesting Aquarium’ and it certainly lives up to its name. The ‘Interesting Aquarium’ has an elementary school theme while the ‘Baby Aquarium’ has a preschool theme, giving the visitor something of a different aquarium experience.

The fish inhabit an environment that is really like an elementary school
The unique ‘Interesting Aquarium’ experience begins when you remove your shoes in the ‘Welcome Zone’, where they have a Principal’s office and music room, just like a real elementary school. Then, visitors can enjoy a variety of themed exhibitions with names like the ‘Experiment Zone’, ‘Revision Zone’, ‘Zone for fish owners, ‘Scary Creature Zone’ and more. We recommend the multiple choice quiz in this area as it teaches you some truly interesting information one piece at a time.
What’s inside the bookshelves and the pencil boxes?
In the ‘Baby Aquarium’ you can find tanks built into the bookshelves and pencil boxes. As the name suggests, this area houses fish eggs and baby fish. Visitors can learn about the birth and development of fish here. Shoes are prohibited inside the ‘Baby Aquarium’ so parents of crawling babies and toddlers can relax and let the children view the fish without worry. There is even a jungle gym and slide for little children to enjoy. Be sure to see the cute illustrations of ‘Fish Boy’ that accompany the exhibit explanations. The explanations do not use difficult words to make it easy for children to enjoy and learn.
A white and rare version of this animal waiting for you
This aquarium is home to a precious albino bathynomus (isopod) called ‘White Circle’. The isopod is typically brown with black eyes, but this albino isopod has a white body with ivory-colored eyes. You can meet Shiromaru in the Deep Sea Organisms zone.
