Amami Marine Exhibition Hall (Kagoshima) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Amami Ocean Exhibition Hall is an aquarium in the Ohama Seaside Park in Amami City. It showcases the creatures living in the sea of Amami, and explains the relationship between the sea, the local people and the natural environment in an easy-to-understand format. There is a deep connection between the people of Amami and coral, and you can find many corals on display here.

The famous ‘Amami Eco-rama’

The Amami Eco-rama is a large tank that exhibits more than 70 species of fish and plants from the sea of Amami. Tropical fish and sea turtles swim around calmly, and there are recreations of Amami’s sandy beaches and coral reefs to allow you to experience the natural beauty of Amami up close. On the second floor, you can feed the sea turtles and fish. It is free to feed the turtles their lettuce, so be sure to give it a try. The turtles are very curious and come right up to you to receive their food.

Enjoy interacting with sea creatures in the ‘touch pool’

There is a touch pool where you can interact with sea creatures from Amami. In this pool you can find sea cucumber, brittle stars, collector urchin and more and observe them up close. You can also see baby sea turtles in the middle of August. If your timing is right, you might even be able to touch one!

Make some handcrafts to take home as souvenirs

Once you have looked through the aquarium, why not try making some handcrafts using sea materials from Amami? There are five different handcrafts you can make here. You can decorate a name plate with shells and corals, gluing the shells down with a glue gun to make a decoration you can enjoy back home. For book lovers, we recommend the class where you can make a bookmark out of seaweed. Sand pictures are easy to make and recommended for small children. If you want to make something useful, why not try a phone strap or keychain made with shells you have drawn on? There are many beautiful Amami souvenirs you can make here, so please give it a try.
