Adachi Park of Living Things (Tokyo) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Adachi Park of Living things is located inside Motofuchie Park in the Hokima District of Adachi. Various mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects are bred and exhibited there. In one corner of the park is the ‘Aquarium Corner’, where visitors can get close to many different types of fish.

A fantastic oversized goldfish tank

We typically associate goldfish with small tanks or goldfish bowls, but in this aquarium corner the goldfish tank is really big! Measuring 5.5 meters long, 2.3 meters deep and 2.7 meters wide, we don’t often see a tank of this size being used for the breeding and display of goldfish in Japan. Inside this oversized tank there are around 1,000 fish including Ryukin, Demekin, Ranchu and others. The effect of all these fish coupled with the sparkling of the air curtain is really fantastic. It can feel quite strange to watch them calmly swimming around way above head height.

Many fascinating fish tanks

There are many other fascinating tanks on display. In ‘Coral World’, a reproduction of a tropical coral reef, we can observe Clownfish, Blue Tang and other adorable tropical fish hiding amongst the coral. In ‘Mangrove World’ we see a reproduction of the mangrove trees that spread out around our seas, rivers and land. Take a peek at where the water meets the land and you might spot the hiding place of a mudskipper or crab.

Enjoy crab fishing

One fun activity to try is crab fishing for the Benkei and Kurobenkei Crabs that are local to Adachi. This activity is available every day from 9:30 – 4:00pm, is unsupervised and free (included with park entry), so do take advantage and give it a try. Please note that on some days you may be fishing for crayfish rather than crabs. Also, at certain times traditional ‘goldfish scooping’ is also available. If you are there at the right time then you should try your luck!
