Mariho Aquarium (Hiroshima) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Mariho Aquarium is a new aquarium in Hiroshima City. It is located inside Hiroshima Marina Hop, a huge outlet mall facing the sea with an amusement park containing a roller coaster and the largest Ferris wheel in Hiroshima Prefecture. It is easy to spend the day here as there are 12 restaurants and a large parking lot in addition to the aquarium. The aquarium contains six tanks and a pond.

The main ‘Lagoon Area’ is dazzlingly beautiful

In the ‘Lagoon Area’ there is a beautiful tank with a white sea bed and emerald green water. Zebra sharks and big rays swim around the sea floor calmly, while colorful small fish flock to the coral reef. There are sofas in front of this area so that you can sit and have a light meal with an alcoholic drink or soft drink. Inside the main hall there are tanks with the popular spotted garden eels and colored jelly fish that will have you absorbed in taking photographs.

Tanks that were built to teach visitors about Hiroshima

In this aquarium, there are tanks which such themes as, ‘The meandering mountain streams of Hiroshima’, ‘The overflowing life of Setouchi’ and ‘Carp’ that help you understand more about the natural environment of Hiroshima. You can see the char, a natural living treasure from Hiroshima’s mountain streams, as well as sardines and octopuses from the Seto Inland Sea. There is a production of the sounds of the Hiroshima mountain streams that sounds very interesting. You can hear the sound of the water flowing energetically through the streams and hear the chirping birds. It will remind visitors that there are places in Hiroshima where these sounds can still be heard.

Check the event schedule!

This aquarium hosts frequent events tailored to the seasons such as Halloween and Valentine’s Day events. The events with free admission are very popular, and there are often long lines outside the aquarium. When the local baseball team, the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, won the championship, they held a Halloween event where people wearing the full Carp uniform received a password to gain free entry. They update event information on the website so it a good idea to check the site before you visit.
