Miyajima Public Aquarium (Miyaji Marine) (Hiroshima) – Access, Hours & Fees

Miyajima Aquarium is an aquarium located in the Seto Inland Sea National Park in Hiroshima. The exhibitions focus on conveying to visitors the beauty of the natural environment of the Seto Inland Sea. This aquarium is also known as ‘Miyaji Marine’ due to its proximity to Itsukushima Shrine, a famous World Heritage Site. This aquarium has not been renovated, instead retaining a distinctly Japanese-style architecture that is both other-worldly and very elegant. The management has focused on the ideas of ‘healing’ and ‘engaging’, so it is possible to participate in many attractions that allow you to engage with living sea creatures more closely.

More than 350 species and 13,000 sea creatures, with a focus on the Seto Inland Sea.

The creatures exhibited in this aquarium are spread across ten zones throughout the main building. You can experience the mysterious world of the Seto Inland Sea and meet penguins, northern sea lions, seals, Asian small-clawed otter and more. There is a pool with sea lion shows and other events held every day. There is also an exhibition of finless porpoise.s It used to be possible to see the finless porpoise all over the Seto Inland Sea, but these days they are quite rare.

The archerfish show is a must-see

The archerfish hunts for insects that are perched on branches and leaves by shooting them down with small droplets of water fired from their mouths. It is very surprising to watch! There is an archerfish ‘shooting performance’ held every day.

Interesting and original souvenirs

There are original souvenirs here, including stuffed finless porpoises and river otters. They also have a t-shirt that was made in collaboration with the local Hiroshima Carp baseball team. It features an adorable finless porpoise and river otter design that would make a great local souvenir.
