Shinyashima Mountain in Kagawa Prefecture is known in Japan for the Battle of Genpei. A new chapter in its history began when the Shinyashima Aquarium opened in 2006. This is a small aquarium that can be seen in about an hour. Because of its size, parents can let children wander without worrying about them getting lost. Adults and children can enjoy exploring this aquarium without become too tired.

Get close to a West Indian Manatee!
The largest tank in the aquarium exhibits a west Indian manatee, which, like the dugong, is known for being a creature on which the myth of the mermaid was founded. Its large, swimming body is very impressive to see, and it will surprise you that such a creature exists in the ocean. During feeding time, the staff gives them plenty of fruits and vegetables and you are able to view them eating up close. There are also limited places for those who would like to feed the manatee, so if you would like to do that be sure to check in advance! There are some original manatee souvenirs for sale in the gift shop, so you can buy something with which to remember your visit.
Approach the dolphins and ride the dolphin boat
In the pool outside you can get close to the bottlenose dolphins in a transparent boat. You can learn a lot by seeing the dolphins up close in a way that you cannot during a show. You can also hear explanations by the staff. When the dolphins are in a good mood you may even be able to touch them. They may also have dolphin feeding events so be sure to check the schedule before your visit.
It might be small, but handmade touches and special efforts by the staff make it fulfilling!
One big feature of this aquarium is the way the staff try their hardest to teach you about the creatures that live there through their handmade signs and humorous commentary. They even have a blog, so be sure to take a look at it before you go.
