The Nijino Mori Park Osakanakan in Ehime Prefecture exhibits about 70 species and 12,000 creatures from the Shimanto River. There are penguins and otters here in addition to the fish. This local-style aquarium is popular for its mobile aquarium and visiting aquarium, too.

Enjoy the outdoor diorama tank
The outdoor diorama tank is an exhibition that recreates the Shimanto River from source to river mouth. Surrounding it are many beautiful plants from the Shimanto River area, so that you can observe the fish and enjoy the natural environment at the same time. Watching sweetfish and trout swim around in a sunlight-dappled tank makes for a beautiful spectacle that appears to be straight out of a painting. In addition, there are many Japanese huchen and Japanese barramundi to see here. This is the largest exhibition of the ruby-eyed Japanese barramundi in the country. Another attraction here is the ‘Half-tunnel Amazon aquarium’. In this impressive and mesmerizing exhibition, you can find the world’s largest freshwater fish, the pirarucu, as well as the golden bonytongue, pangasius and other large fish.
Many events to enjoy!
There are many events to enjoy at this aquarium on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and during holiday weeks. Watch the penguins walk around during the popular ‘Penguin Walk’ event held twice a day. You can take a photo with them after the event. There is also an event where you can touch a penguin and another where you can watch them eat. It is unusual to be able to touch a penguin on the back as you can here. You can also learn about their diet. ‘River Otter Snack Time’ is another popular event. You can hold a cup of otter snacks in front of a window and watch as an otter reaches out to get them. It is unbelievably cute to watch. ‘River Otter Meal Time’ is an event that is held daily, rather than just on weekends and holidays. You can watch how the otters use their dexterous hands to eat their food.
