The Tottori Karo Crab Aquarium is an aquarium focusing on crabs. The unique concept behind this aquarium is that a crab doesn’t need to move to be enjoyed. There are many events to take part in here.

Be surprised by the number of different crabs!
There are about 20 varieties of crab at this aquarium. They are exhibited in themed tanks. For example, in the ‘Compare Sizes’ tank you can compare the 4-meter-long Japanese spider crab with tiny, 1cm long crabs. In the ‘Various Crabs’ tank, you can find an exhibit with sponge crabs carrying sponges or shells on their backs, cute but poisonous floral egg crabs and many more unique crabs. There is also the American horseshoe crab, a creature we call a ‘crab’, but which is actually closer to a spider or scorpion, as well as the Louisiana crawfish, which is closer to a shrimp.
Don’t worry, there are fish here, too!
The crab might be the main attraction, but fish lovers will also find something to enjoy. You can find the big banded hound shark, the hong kong grouper with his adorable face, and many more fish with personality from the Sea of Tottori. The most notable of these is the lump fish. With his round little body and funny expressions, this cute fish is extremely popular. The lumpfish is a rare and mysterious fish so be sure to see him here!
Many experiences to try
This aquarium has the motto, ‘Look, engage, experience’. In the outdoor pool near the entrance you can touch the banded hound shark and parrotfish, and on hot days, you can even climb into the water. There is a touch pool where you can touch hermit crabs, sea urchins and starfish. There are craft classes where you can make a phone accessories and animals from bamboo, and a game where you can toss crab shells into a bucket. It is an aquarium where you can truly ‘Look, engage and experience’.
