The Sea Turtle Museum of Kumejima is an aquarium specializing in sea turtles located on Ojima (Ou Island). There is a bridge that connects Ojima to Kumejima (Kume Island). The natural environment of Kumejima is amazing, so much so that if you dive into the water here you might spot a sea turtle if your timing is right. And if you don’t? Well, you can still see plenty of sea turtles in the museum.

Get a sense of the sea turtles from up close
There are seven known varieties of sea turtle, and this aquarium exhibits three of them; the loggerhead sea turtle, green sea turtle and hawksbill sea turtle. There is a sea turtle here so big that a human adult could ride on its backs. You will be fascinated by its calm presence as it swims around the tank. Another must-see is a tank with many adorable tiny sea turtles. The explanation panels and videos are also interesting to see. They provide explanations about sea turtles and the world’s endangered sea turtles so that you can deepen your understanding in an enjoyable way.
You can touch a sea turtle!
You can touch a sea turtle in a special event held during holidays such as Spring break, Golden Week and during the summer vacation. After feeding the sea turtles and touching their shells, you learn about their ecology and current state. It is a rare and valuable experience to have a large sea turtle come up to you and eat from your hands. This would be a great addition to a self-guided summer research project about sea turtles.

After visiting the aquarium, you can find a sea turtle-themed souvenir in the gift shop. There are many different items here featuring the motif of the sea turtle. We recommend the large variety of t-shirts with cute designs drawn by the turtle-loving staff of the aquarium. You can even get matching designs for parents and kids!
