Muroran Public Aquarium (Hokkaido) – Access & Fees

Representing Muroran City’s history is this aquarium that was opened in 1953. Since then, for 60 years this location has supported the community for over 60 years. The exhibits have been updated and renovated while keeping the nostalgic architecture that gives it a nice aesthetic.

The Jellyfish and Skilfish are a must-see!

Muroran Aquarium is the first place in Japan that succeeded in housing the deep sea native skilfish. It also serves as the symbol of the aquarium, and is located in the innermost display. Another recommendation is the jellyfish exhibit, where several different species float at their own speed, making for a relaxing place to be.

Doctor fish await you at the entrance!

There is a doctor fish experience available for free toward the entrance of the aquarium. Feel free to dip your hand in! Just make sure to keep your hand still and you will be able to observe the interesting ways the fish move.

Create memories at the touch pool

In a shallow tank, different types of shells and starfish await you! Many local children who grow up in Muroran touch sea life for the first time here, making it a favorite. Anyone is welcome to participate, including adults.

The most popular attraction is the penguin walk!

The biggest highlight of the day is the penguin walk, where at a certain time everyday a group of penguins will walk down a predetermined path. The appeal here is how close you can get to them, making it a popular one for children as well. However, they do have sharp beaks so beware!

More than just an aquarium

Outdoors, connected is an amusement park with things such as a ferris wheel, bumper cars, a merry-go-round, and trains! Many folks who plan to stay around for a day enjoy both facilities and even go for a good lunch picnic outdoors on a day with nice weather!
