Yama No Aquarium (Hokkaido) – Access & Fees

Opened in 1978, the Yama No Aquarium is located at Onneyu Hot Springs on a mountain. Closed once during 2011 for renovation, the newly opened aquarium features some of the most unique exhibits in the aquarium world. As a new facility, it has been gaining popularity as the most captivating aquarium of the Okhotsk region.

A tank that freezes..? and a waterfall…?

One of the biggest features of the aquarium is the 4-season exhibits. The world’s first “frozen” tank allows visitors to observe fish that hide on the lowest areas of the water during the winter seasons by freezing over the surface. There is also a waterfall exhibit where visitors can see from underneath how the dolly varden trout swims as the water hits the pool with a strong velocity.

The impressive Japanese Huchen tanks

The Japanese huchen is one of the rarest freshwater fish that can grow up to 2 meters in size. However, it takes an estimated 15 years in order to get to half of that size. Here at the Yama No Aquarium, you will be able to see 40 of these giant freshwater fish freely swimming around in great pride. Roughly half of them exceed the size of 1 meter, and a scale of this exhibit only exists here! It is said that as the size of the huchen grows past a meter, their face begins to lose structure, but here some stay just as beautiful… Come by and see for yourself!

Freshwater fish, grown right in Onneyu

There are several species from around the world such as the Asian arowana and the arapaima on display, and all of them have been raised right here in the waters brought in by the Onneyu Hot Springs! By balancing the warm and cold water, they have been raised in a balanced environment. During your visit, feel free to also enjoy the great warm and relaxing waters of the hot springs!
