Teradomari Aquarium (Niigata) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Teradomari Aquarium is an impressive, octagon-shaped facility that floats in the sea and looks just like a castle. It has more than 400 species and 10,000 creatures with a popular penguin exhibit.

Be greeted by protected sea turtles

As soon as you enter the aquarium you are greeted by red sea turtles and hawksbill sea turtles in the temperate seawater zone. These sea turtles grew up in this aquarium after they were rescued as babies when they washed ashore on the coast of Teradomari. They look so wonderful swimming comfortably around their tank! If your timing is right you might even see a baby sea turtle.

On the first floor, there are other sea and freshwater exhibits such as colorful tropical fish, the popular spotted garden eel, an Amazon tank with piraruca and more. On the second floor there is a jellyfish tank, a touching pool where you can touch starfish, sea cucumber, and more, and a Japanese freshwater fish corner containing the Japanese huchen fish. On the third floor there is an exhibition of cliones and axolotls, so-called ‘angels of the drift ice’. There is also a rest corner where you can take a break while looking out over the Sea of Japan.

Meet the penguins

This might be a small aquarium but they do have penguins. The penguins living here are Magellan penguins which can be found on the pacific coast of South America. There is a penguin area on the second floor. It is located outside, however, so on windy days they do not come out. It would be a great photograph to have the silhouette of the penguin with the Sea of Japan behind.

There are shows to see!

This aquarium hosts two shows. In the large tank on the first floor is the ‘Diver Feeding Show’ that takes place on Saturdays and Sundays. The diver enters the tank and feeds the fish directly, so you can see the fish flock to the diver for food. The second show is the ‘Diverfish Feeding and Shooting Show’ located on the first floor. This show is held every day. The diverfish jump up to 2 meters in the air allowing the food to be ‘shot’ into their mouths.
