Ageshima Aquarium (Niigata) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Ageshima Aquarium is located on beautiful Sado Island in Senkakuwan Bay. It is a small aquarium but features fish from around Sado Island as well as swimming squid.

Fish from Sado Island are the focus

The exhibits in this aquarium focus on fish from Sado Island. There are plenty of fish that we might know are nearby but rarely have the chance to appreciate up close such as sea bass, sea bream, black scraper fish and yellowtail. There is also an exhibit of sea fireflies that shouldn’t be missed. They emit a beautiful blue light that you could watch forever.

It’s rare to see a squid swimming!

Much effort has been focused on the exhibit of squid swimming. We might think that squid are not so unusual, but the truth is that it is quite rare to see an exhibit of swimming squid in an aquarium. From mid-January to mid-May there are spear squid, from mid-May to mid-September there are cuttlefish and from mid-September to January there are Japanese spineless cuttlefish. It is a unique exhibition in which you can see a variety of squid depending on the season.

Enjoy interacting with living creatures

In the ‘touch tank’ you can handle sea urchin, star fish, turban shells, sea cucumber and more. These creatures might be familiar to us but we rarely have the chance to hold one, so be sure to stop by this exhibit to see them up close.

Enjoy beautiful views over Senkakuwan Bay

After visiting the aquarium be sure to visit Ageshima Park to see the beautiful views! Renounced scientist Dr. Tetsugoro Wakimizu described Senkakuwan Bay as being more beautiful than Hardangerfjord in Norway (said to be the most beautiful bay in the world). Senkakuwan Bay provides beautiful contrasts between the rugged, jagged rocks and the clear skies. We recommend taking a trip on a glass-bottomed boat!
