Nakagawa Aquatic Park (Tochigi) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Nakagawa Aquatic Park is a familiar aquarium to the residents of Tochigi Prefecture. Here they recreate the natural environment of the Naka River from its source to downstream. There is also a focus on the rivers of the world, including a section for the fish of the amazon river. In this recreation of the world’s greatest river, the amazon river, visitors can get close to catfish, piranha, rays and more.

The touching tank is popular with the kids

In the touch tank, visitors can pick up crayfish, turtles and other creatures from our rivers and lakes to observe them up close. You can also touch starfish, sea urchin and sharks. This exhibition is always full of children. In 2013 they introduced a new exhibit of doctor fish, known for eating dead skin from humans. If you put your hand in the tank they will all flock to it.

‘Experience Courses’ take the charm of the ocean beyond just viewing it

Take a craft workshop or a try a cooking class using local ingredients. This is not just a nature experience but a cultural one. In the fish laboratory they research the anatomy of fish and conduct experiments. Visitors can hear specialist staff members talk about their work.

Lots of fun events!

This aquatic park holds many events according to the season. During the Doll Festival (March 3) there is an oversized Hina doll and over Valentine’s Day there is a special Valentines-themed exhibition. At Christmas time you can even see Santa Claus taking an underwater walk in the fish tank!

An aquarium where you can enjoy the water

There is a water plaza on site where children can enjoy playing in the water during the summer months. There is also a small grass area and athletic space nearby where children can run around. This space is often used for field trips by nearby kindergartens and elementary schools, so you will often see the children sitting on blankets eating their lunch. The fishing pond is open during the summer months to give visitors the chance to experience fishing onsite (prior reservations required).
