The Takachihokyo Freshwater Aquarium is located in the Takachiho Gorge, a National Scenic and Natural Monument. The aquarium is in a lodge-like building with a triangular roof, and the fish here live in clean, clear water from the Tamatare Falls. A visit to this small aquarium is the perfect way to spend time while you wait for a boat as the boats leave from right nearby.

There are around 100 kinds of fish, from the familiar to the foreign
A characteristic of this aquarium is that the fish are kept in spring water from the Tamatare Falls that is highly transparent. The main exhibition here contains river fish that live in the Gokase River basin in the Takachiho Gorge, including Japanese salmon and dark sleeper. It is fun to watch these familiar fish swimming around. Besides the fish of the Gokase River, there are also many other fish from Japan and overseas. Of these, the ‘cobalt blue rainbow trout’ is a must-see. This rainbow trout is born without black pigment, so the color of its body is light blue. Their bodies are weak and the survival rate after birth is low, so it is rare to see these fish in an aquarium! Be sure to see the precious cobalt-blue rainbow trout while you are here. There are axolotls and sturgeon from Miyazaki prefecture. You can also see foreign freshwater fish such as the Holstein eel, which should really be called the panda eel or Dalmatian eel based on its appearance, as well as large alligator gar fish.
Touch a fish or try fishing!
There is a corner in this aquarium containing the popular ‘doctor fish’. You can only put your hand in the tank but is fun to try it. They will come and nibble at your hands and the effect is quite therapeutic. There is also a pond outside the aquarium where you can feed sturgeon, carp and rainbow trout. There is also a fishing pond, so you can rent a pole and bait to enjoy fishing for rainbow trout. If you catch a fish, you can take it home because the staff will clean and salt it for you. The taste of the rainbow trout raised in this clear stream is exceptional!
