Idenoyama Freshwater Aquarium (Miyazaki) – Access, Hours & Fees

The Idenoyama Freshwater Aquarium is located in Kobayashi City in the southwestern part of Miyazaki Prefecture. This simple but beautifully constructed aquarium is in a wonderful natural setting, surrounded by lush nature and forests with clear blue skies above. There are 130 species and 1500 freshwater fish here, from local fish from Miyazaki prefecture such as Japanese salmon and sweetfish, to freshwater fish from around the world such as pirarucu, bonytongues, redtail catfish and more. It is possible to see fish that live in other parts of the world, and to feed them, too.

Be welcomed by the giant salamander!

At the entrance there is a tank with water sourced from a mountain spring. In it is the giant salamander, a natural wonder of Japan. In addition, you can also see the first sturgeon to be successfully farmed in Miyazaki Prefecture

Meet a creature with an adorable face in this large tank

On display here is the Mexican walking fish, a similar creature to the axolotl. His face always seems to be laughing. In fact, they are actually in danger of extinction and great efforts are underway to protect them.

The art of nature itself! These lovely fish will soothe you

The ‘parrot fire cichlid’, a rare variety of cichlid, is also on display. This cute fish has a body color that varies from red and white like a goldfish to shades of yellow, blue and red, with a small mouth and prominent eyes. The Mickey Mouse Platyfish is housed in chic designer space. This fish is so named due to his high fins, red color and the pattern on his tail that looks like Mickey Mouse’s ears. He really looks just like him!

Relax in a calming space

One unique highlight of this aquarium is a tank that is illuminated by natural light from a skylight. There are very beautiful fish swimming around here that seem to welcome you with their energy! During the firefly season there are events that have this aquarium buzzing with energy. This is an environment where you can enjoy nature, and benefit from its relaxing effects.
