Isahaya City is located in Nagasaki Prefecture in Kyushu and contains a polder, or reclaimed land. The Mutsugoro Aquarium is in the ‘Isahaya Yu Yu Village of Land Reclamation’, a small theme park on the reclaimed land. There is a tidal tank of about 5 meters in diameter that recreates the Honmyo River, the lifesource of Isahaya, from its source to its mouth in the Ariake sea.

Observe the bluespotted mudskipper!
The bluespotted mudskipper can only be found in the Ariake Sea. In Japan they are often shown on television jumping out of the mud, but in fact they are now in danger of extinction. In the bluespotted mudskipper exhibition at this aquarium it is possible to carefully observe their form and movement to understand more about them. They are very timid, so take your time. You might fall for their big eyes and unique way of moving. There are also other rare creatures such as the eel goby and shuttles mudskipper, so be sure to check them out. The ‘touch tank’ is popular with children as you can touch turtles and carp. The creatures in here change often so you can touch something different on each visit.

Nearby the aquarium is the Isahaya Reclamation Museum. Once you have learned about the bluespotted mudskipper and creatures of the tidal flats, you can come here next to find out more about reclaimed land. It is possible to learn about the history of land reclamation and see many of the tools used to carry it out. You can also visit the historic house of the village leader which was relocated here There are also other facilities such as a horse-riding park, a bicycle riding area, mini golf, boats, bicycles, a jungle gym, fishing moat, and a small zoo, making this a popular place to bring children. In summer, many sunflowers bloom in nearby fields, while in autumn they are covered in cosmos. This is a place where you can enjoy both plants and animals, so it is easy to spend a full day relaxing here.
