Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium (Nagasaki) – Access, Hours & Fees

There are 18 kinds of penguins in the world, but this aquarium in Nagasaki is the only one in the world that exhibits nine of them. They began to specialize in penguins when the aquarium was renovated. Now it is an aquarium dedicated to penguins, the natural environment and conservation.

Watching the penguins dive at high speed into a 4-meter tank is very impressive!

The most impressive thing to see in this aquarium is the penguin diving into a large tank. They swim through it at such high speeds that they appear to be flying! It is rare to see a penguin tank of this scale anywhere in the world, so be sure to take your time to enjoy it. You will have the feeling that you are swimming in the sea with the penguins.

Lots of events where you can look, touch and think

In an area called ‘Penguin Square’, you can touch Humboldt Penguins that have been bred in this aquarium. The feeling of their feathers, the hardness and sharpness of the beak and surprisingly keen eyes might change your idea of penguins. There are other feeding experiences and even a penguin parade. Be sure to check the schedule in advance on the home page.

An aquarium with a deep research history

Previously, the penguin was thought to be difficult to breed and keep in captivity for long periods because it is easy for them to get sick. This aquarium has been a world leader in penguin breeding, so much so that the method used here is known overseas as the ‘Nagasaki Method’. If you consider how penguins used to be kept, you might learn a few things about the new methods as you walk around this aquarium.

A focus on penguins, but there are also fish

There are more than penguins here! You can also see the bluespotted mudskipper, the Japanese anchovy, jellyfish, crabs and different kinds of sharks. There is a rare Mekong giant catfish from Thailand which was brought here so that it can be studied. The road from the parking lot to the aquarium building has been transformed into a biotope and many aquatic organisms are bred here.
