Banjo Osakanakan (Oita) – Access, Hours & Fees

Osakanakan is a freshwater aquarium located in a roadside station in the mountains of Saiki City, Oita Prefecture. The exhibitions here focus on fish from the nearby Bansho River. They hold regular observation trips to the river as well as bird-watching expeditions. They are also working to protect nature and the environment in the local community.

A truly realistic recreation of the Bansho River

The main attraction here is an exhibition of fish from the nearby Bansho River. The tanks in which they are displayed are realistic recreations of the river, divided into the upper, middle and lower basins, as well as the estuary area. It really looks as though a piece of the river has been cut out and brought here. The sun shines on the upper and middle basin tanks and you can observe Japanese salmon, Satsukimasu salmon, sweetfish and more swimming in a recreated waterfall. The tank is illuminated at night, so if you are lucky you might spot a sleeping fish. The lower basin tank depicts a stagnant, quiet river. Here there are large catfish, eels hiding in rocks and exotic fish. The tank depicting the estuary that leads to Saeki Bay even has old tires that have sunk underwater. Here you can see brackish fish such as blackhead seabream, Japanese seabass and flathead grey mullet.

See tropical fish from around the world!

In addition to the exhibitions of familiar fish from the Bansho river, there is also a ‘greenhouse corner’ housing tropical fish from around the world. There are fish here from Southeast Asia, South America, Africa and more. Of these, the most impressive are the giant redtail catfish and the silver arowana! Don’t miss seeing some rare fish like the humphead cichlid, which raises eggs in its mouth, and the lyretail cichlid, which protects its eggs in a couple.

Relax in a natural environment

The roadside station in which the aquarium is located is abundant in natural life with many different types of trees. In spring it is a good place to see the cherry blossoms blooming. Many wild birds come to rest in these trees, so there are regular birdwatching sessions. By all means come and enjoy the fish as well as the abundant natural environment around this aquarium.
