Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium is an aquarium that hit 1 million visitors within the first 4 months that it was open. All kinds of fish swim in the largest tank!
Of the many different tanks in the aquarium, the one past the entrance is a giant tank spanning 14 meters in width, 7 and a half meters in height. The tank, called “Vibrant Life in the Sea”, features large sized creatures such as the hammerhead shark to a school of Japanese pilchard, to smaller hidden gems such as the fat greenling hiding and protecting its offspring. As there is no overhang above the tank, you can enjoy the view with natural sunlight falling onto the fish, making for a dynamic setting to view them in.
The ever popular dolphin show!
At this aquarium, the outdoor pools have dolphin shows as a program. This show is made possible with the help of Yokohama Hakkei Island Sea Paradise’s help, and has made this the only dolphin show available in the prefecture. With a totally capacity of 1000 people and no “tank” between the audience and the pool, you get a nice view and the chance for a splash! The comical tricks of the California sea lion and the breathtaking jumps of the bottlenose dolphin are absolutely a must-see.
Penguins take a walk in the winter scenery!
On days with snow, the view of penguins walking down the crystal staircase feels even more special than usual! For those penguin lovers, you will be able to meet the cute Humboldt penguins and the king penguin!
The pride of the Tohoku Region is the Mola Mola Tank
Mola Mola, or the Ocean Sunfish is one of the most delicate fish in the world, making it tough to raise in an aquarium setting. Here, “Yu-Yu” has been included in the Guinness world record as the oldest living raised sunfish, getting a citizens award from the city of Matsushsima.
Several experience programs are available!
There are many different programs and workshops such as “Draw your own aquarium”, where your art will swim, and touch pools to feel sea creatures. Want to handshake an otter? Come on by! There are several seasonal events, such as projection mapping events and night time pool openings so keep an eye out on the official twitter!
