Awashima Marine Park (Shizuoka) – Access, Hours & Fees

Awashima Marine Park, located near the city of Numazu in Shizuoka, is on a deserted island serviced by a ferry. This island is only accessible by those who have a ferry ticket or who hold a fishing license, so if you want to explore an island as well as visit an aquarium this is the right place for you.

Exhibitions of the living creatures of Awashima Island

The first floor of this aquarium focuses on ecological exhibitions. Here you can see the courtship and spawning of living creatures. On the second floor you can touch sea urchin, starfish, and Japanese spider crab. They hold a story time twice a day that is very popular with children.

On your arrival you will see pools containing many living creatures

The marine park has a seal pool, a penguin pool, a sea lion pool, a turtle pool and a dolphin pool making a total of 5 pools. The dolphin pool is a natural pool surrounded by coves, and the show held here is one of the main attractions. Once a day at the penguin pool there is a paid event where you can feed a penguin. Participants have the chance to get close to a penguin and feed him a fish.

The ‘Frog House’ is full of things to see

There are about 50 kinds of frogs on display, the most in all of Japan! There are some really rare frogs on display that you will surely never have seen or heard of before. A visit to the Frog House gives you the surprising feeling of having taken a trip around the world. There is a mechanism inside the tanks to simulate rain regularly. Seeing the glossy frogs among the plants as the rain falls on them is very beautiful and sure to leave a lasting impression. If you are lucky, you can also observe the staff feeding the frogs.

Awashima Island itself is very appealing!

This island is a ‘power spot’ as it is the site of a shrine honoring a money-washing goddess of fortune. Cape Koganezaki has a beautiful sunset in which the cape turns a deep red in stark contrast to the deep cobalt blue of the sea! When it is sunny you can even see Mt. Fuji making it a very romantic place.
