Kakegawa Kachoen (Shizuoka) – Access, Hours & Fees

Kakegawa Kachoen is a flower and bird theme park that opened in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture in 2003. As the name suggests there are many flowers and birds to fascinate the eye, but visitors will also find exhibits of colorful tropical fish and powerful large fish.

A water lily pond with tropical fish

Various types of water lilies can be seen in the water lily pool where tropical fish such as moonfish, guppies, tilapia are bred and exhibited. You can also experience feeding the fish. At the rear of the water lily pool is an area for large fish. Previously it was only possible to see this pool from above, but after a renovation in 2016 you can now also see it from the side. from the side after the renewal of 2016. Be sure to see the powerful forms of the pirarucu and alligator gar up close!

A touching pool, too

The ‘Touch and Fish Corner’ is located in one corner of the ‘Waterfront Birds Zone’. This corner contains the popular ‘Doctor Fish’ and ‘Fish Therapy’ exhibits, where fish will eat the dead skin from your feet to leave them smooth and clean. When you put your hands or feet in the pool, many fish will flock to them and it is lovely to watch. They will begin nibbling gently at your skin but it actually feels nice and is quite relaxing. They have towels for you to wipe your hands and feet on afterward. Speaking of Doctor Fish, the general variety is a type called the red garra. It is a companion to the tilapia fish you can find here in the water lily pool. They are typically black, but there are some here that are pink, too, so see if you can find them.

Enjoy interacting with adorable penguins!

The penguins are popular at this aquarium! The Penguin pool is located just a few steps from the reception and you can observe them walking around and swimming without any glass between you. It is possible to feed them, but only during set times. It is even possible to hold one in your lap, but you need to be first in line. This is a very rare opportunity to hold a penguin and take a photo of it in your lap.
