Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden (Shizuoka) – Access, Hours & Fees

This hot spring resort has a garden focusing on alligators and tropical vegetation. It is called the ‘Alligator and Banana Garden’ in Japanese, but animal lovers will also find lesser pandas, manatees, flamingoes, tortoises, and many more creatures.

Discover 17 species and about 140 crocodiles

This aquarium gives you the rare opportunity to see and learn about many of the world’s crocodiles. There are panels throughout the facility so that you can learn about the characteristics and behavior of the various crocodiles in quiz form. There is an area where you can observe the crocodile very close through the glass, and also a petting corner where you can touch a baby crocodile. There is an excited atmosphere in the aquarium during this event! Some of the crocodiles kept here are endangered species.

Not just crocodiles! Lesser pandas live here, too

This facility houses Japan’s only red panda, a variety of lesser panda. Many zoos have Sichuan Red Pandas which live in the Sichuan region of China, but this is the only location in Japan to keep Nishimura Pandas which are native to the Himalayas. You can also see flamingos, tortoises and talkative parrots, and enjoy feeding carp in the pond.

Try a banana from the Atagawa thermal hot springs!

There are about 20 varieties of bananas growing at the Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden using heat from the hot springs. Once you have been impressed by the power of the crocodile, and healed by the cuteness of the lesser Panda, you can take a break and enjoy the juice from a hot spring banana!

There are carnivorous plants growing here

Be sure to see the carnivorous plants while you are enjoying the vivid flowers in the greenhouse. We have few opportunities to see these types of plants. Their beautiful blooms depend on the season, so be sure to check before you visit.
