The Katsuura Undersea Park Underwater Observatory opened in 1980 and is a rare place from which to admire the coastal inlets. This park is popular with families while the sea museum is a great place to learn about the Sea of Boso. The observatory tower here is actually underwater and is the deepest in Asia, allowing visitors to view the sea from as low as 8 meters deep at high tide.

Experience the excitement of the ocean however often you visit
This aquarium publishes a daily update on twitter to let people know the clarity of the ocean that day. As this is the ocean itself, the sea conditions and the fish you can observe can change unpredictably. This is also one of the attractions of this aquarium.
Here the fish swim right up to the glass, allowing you to observe them up close. Over the course of a year you can see around 90 varieties of fish, so one way to enjoy this aquarium is to check to see which fish will be around for the season and time of your visit. Sometimes you can even see a big shark swimming past!
This isn’t too large of an aquarium so you will not get tired walking around. The slightly dim lighting means it is easy to become absorbed in the sight of the ocean around you. There are also information signs so you can enjoy reading about the different fish as you discover them.
Above ground the Pacific Ocean opens out before you
Back above ground, on days when the weather is fine you can look out over the Pacific Ocean! There are benches so that you can relax and take in the sea at your leisure. From this point the marine blue stretches into the curve of the horizon and you can see the Katsuura lighthouse far off in the distance. We recommend visiting at dusk as the sunset lasts for a long time and you can watch it until the very end. The observation deck here is inside, allowing visitors to enjoy the sunset even in the cold winter months.
The ocean theme of Katsuura continues in the park
Enjoy a relaxing meal at the restaurant inside the park as you watch the waves and the boats anchored offshore. This restaurant serves a variety of seafood dishes.
