Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium (Aichi) – Access, Hours & Fees

Opened in 1992, the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium is a large-scale aquarium in the Nagoya Port Garden Pier. They focus on breeding and research, and have succeeded in the artificial hatching of Red Sea turtles, the breeding of Gentoo penguins, Chinstrap penguins and Adelie penguins, and the artificial insemination and breeding of orca.

Graceful orca and beluga whale greet you as soon as you enter

A powerful sight is waiting for you as soon as you pass the entrance gate. The orca here are a family and love observing visitors through the glass! Public training of the orca occurs regularly. At this time, you can experience the size and breathing of the orca and appreciate the shape of their heads. The commentary by the trainers here is very popular.

Next to this tank, there is a pool created in the image of Hudson Bay in Canada, home to the beluga whale. The beluga here also live in a family, and you can observe their strange form and ecology close up. Divers sometimes enter the pool so at those times visitors can see how they communicate with them.

A compelling dolphin performance!

There are plenty of events to see in this aquarium. One of the best is the dolphin performance, held in the world’s largest outdoor dolphin pool. The dolphin here swim and jump around freely in their huge pool and it is wonderful to watch! This pool is not only wide, but deep, allowing the dolphin to jump up to 6 meters in the air.

The ‘sardine tornado’ is a must-see

The floating beauty of around 35,000 sardines spiraling and moving as one organism must be seen to be believed. It is very powerful to view it up close, but also fun to see the entire tank from a distance.

They are also focused on protection and breeding

This aquarium has focused on sea turtle research for a long time. They breed three kinds of sea turtles and continue to do research on their breeding and behavior in the wild. In addition, this was the first place in the world to breed Antarctic krill, a species of krill that is the food of many sea creatures.
