Hekinan Seaside Aquarium is a small aquarium that does not have any flashy shows or exhibitions. Instead, they do have a variety of sea creatures from various parts of Japan.
There is also an exhibition on the fish of the nearby Yahagi River which flows through Hekinan city, so visitors can learn about the aquatic life of the local area. Neither too big nor too small, it is ideal for children visiting an aquarium for the first time as they will be able to walk around it by themselves.

See the large ‘Panorama’ tank
In this large tank weighing 200 tons, you can enjoy panoramic views of migratory fish and fish that live on the Japan coast. Feeding time is also a highlight. Behind-the-scenes tours are held on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Visitors can see the rear of the aquarium which is not typically accessible. There is an explanation by the staff and you also have the chance to view this large tank from above.
Let the jellyfish soothe you
We recommend the soothing ‘Jellyfish Corner’. Visitors can also view jellyfish babies, called ‘Ephyra larvae’, through a microscope. Occasionally, there are limited-time exhibits of jellyfish, and visitors come to take pictures of them! If you are interested please check the website.
Enjoy the lecture corner
In the lecture corner of the aquarium, they sell seven types of paper hats in shapes such as clownfish and sharks. They can be put together on the spot, so they seem like a good souvenir. The kids’ corner has a soft leather floor so that you can let small children play with peace of mind. Here kids will find stuffed animals, picture books, and a low fish tank that is designed for small children to enjoy.
The Science Museum is also a must
On the second floor of the aquarium is the Hekinan City Youth Sea Science Museum (free entry). Divided into various zones such as ‘Forest’, ‘River’ and ‘Sea’, the ‘Water’ zone gives information about the water that circulates on Earth. Visitors can enjoy learning about the importance of water while touching the exhibits, watching video footage, and answering a quiz.
