Wotto Hamanako Aquatic Experience Center is a facility that focuses on Lake Hamana to introduce the life ecology of the nearby Enshu Beach and Miyakoda River. This place was originally a Fisheries Experiment Station, and retains its original concept of ‘a place where you can learn about fish’. Here, they conduct research into the eel, a well-known inhabitant of Lake Hamana, and you can find in the aquarium a rare swarm of eels and giant eels.
Contents
Have a conversation with a diver while he swims in a large tank!
The aquarium here contains a stream tank, small fish tanks and a large water tank to exhibit many of the creatures that can be found upstream in Lake Hamana right down to Enshu Beach. This aquarium is very easy to view as all the exhibits are grouped by theme and they show the natural environment as it would be in nature. ‘Talking Underwater TV’ is an event held in the large water tank where you can ask questions to a diver while he swims. Children really enjoy watching the scenery from the diver’s perspective via a monitor.
There are plenty of discoveries to be made in the touch tank!
One of the most popular spots in this aquarium is the touch tank where many tropical fish are on display. This tank has small holes along the side and you can put your hands through them into the water. ‘Why doesn’t the water spill out?’ you might ask. Well, you will have to go and find out! You can go enter a shallow pool to touch a starfish or sea cucumber. It might be good to bring a change of clothes and a towel if you are planning to do this.
Experience studying in the science room
There is a learning zone on the second floor of the aquarium. In a room that looks like a school’s science room, you will find exhibits of crabs, jellyfish and octopus from Lake Hamana. There are a lot of posters about fish in the hallway. Among them, ‘The story of poisonous fish’ is an interesting one to read. There is a computer where you can answer questions about the fish of the aquarium. The questions are quite difficult, but please have a try.
Lake Hamana Garden Park is nearby
The Lake Hamana Garden Park, which was built on the site of the Lake Hamana Flower Expo, is about a 5-minute drive away. This is a worthwhile place to see, and visitors can also enjoy the water playground and a cruise on a boat.
