In the Toyohashi Zoo and Botanical Park there is a polar animal museum housing polar bears, penguins, seals and more. In this facility, there is a botanical garden and a natural history museum in addition to the zoo, so visitors can truly enjoy learning about nature and life in many different ways.

Come face to face with a polar bear with just a sheet of glass between you!
The polar bear pool has glazed glass so that you can observe the polar bears swimming. As you approach the viewing aisle, you will be able to see just how big a polar bear’s body is, and feel overwhelmed by its power. The truth is that the female polar bear here, a girl name ‘Cookie’, doesn’t like the cold and so does not enter the water often during winter. It is interesting to see these individual differences between the Arctic species.
Four kinds of penguins live here
There are four kinds of penguins here; the King Penguin, Gentoo Penguin, Humboldt Penguin and Southern Rockhopper Penguin. The Humboldt Penguin live outdoors, while the others live indoors, so you will have a chance to observe each of them closely. All four varieties operate in a strict societal hierarchy, so be sure to observe the relationships between them! Among the Gentoo penguins especially there are many active individuals, so you can observe them parenting or fighting over territory.
The spotted seals are very curious!
The spotted seals can often be seen ‘observing’ the visitors from their cylindrical tank! This tank is a wide cylinder and the seal will often swim around it sideways, demonstrating how well they know the length of their own bodies. When there are few visitors, the seals will float leisurely on their backs with their bellies pointed upward. This is the kind of exhibition that would be worth seeing at a few different times if you are able.
